Launched in 1997, Jefferson's brand of bourbon was named in honor of America’s third president. Thomas Jefferson had spent most of his time crafting whiskey from leftover grain from his estate after retiring from politics.
Unlike most bourbon brands that pride themselves in tradition, the Louisville, Kentucky-based company displayed a disregard for the convention by using various methods to create their many unique expression ranging from simple cask-finishing all the way to taking their bourbons on long sea voyages. Despite their penchant for unconventional approaches, however, they garnered a devoted following among drinkers who wholeheartedly enjoy their various unique takes on America’s signature spirit.
The Jefferson's Cognac Finish Straight Rye Whiskey is another creation of the Jefferson brand for rye whiskey. What they did is marry spicy American whiskey with cognac by maturing the whiskey from 9 to 19 months in ex-cognac casks. This added complexity to the traditional American whiskey which is a typical move for Jefferson.
On the nose, this straight rye whiskey gives off the aroma of cinnamon and honey and the flavors of citrus, spice, and nutmeg with a very long finish of oranges and honey.
