Introduced in 1996, Woodford Reserve is a brand of premium small-batch bourbon produced by the Woodford Reserve Distillery, one of the country’s oldest still-operating distilleries. The distillery was originally known as the Old Oscar Pepper Distillery and passed through multiple owners before being acquired by the Brown-Forman Corporation who, after extensive refurbishment, re-christened it into its current name. Coinciding with this rebrand, the company also launched an eponymous bourbon brand which was promoted as the official bourbon of the Kentucky Derby and used to make the $1,000 mint julep cocktails that are sold to patrons on Derby Day.
Each batch of Woodford Reserve Bourbon starts with a mash bill consisting of 72% corn, 18% rye, and 10% malted barley which is fermented and then triple-distilled creating a clean, smooth spirit which they then proceed to age in new, charred American oak barrels. After 6-7 years of slowly developing its flavor, the finished bourbon is then cut with pure water before being finally bottled and labeled.
Each sip of this bourbon greets its drinker with a robust nose of vanilla, cocoa, honey, butterscotch, oak, and light smoke. This is then complemented by a full-bodied palate of sweet cereal, brown sugar, espresso, winter spice, rye, almonds, and ginger, all neatly coming together into a long and persistent finish of cereals and oaky spice.
