Since the passing of Pickerel, Stranahan master distiller Rob Dietrich has stepped up to helm the brand’s operations.
Crafted in batches of 5,000 bottles at a time, the Blackened Whiskey starts its life with a collection of straight whiskeys sourced from various undisclosed distilleries from across North America. The initial process is to blend these whiskeys carefully then the "Black Noise" magic begins. During this process, the blended whiskeys are placed in "black brandy barrels" to finish for a few weeks while constantly barraged with low-hertz sound. This agitates the spirit within to absorb even more of the wood’s character than it would have had it been left undisturbed. The end result is a rich and multi-layered whiskey expression, tamed with pure water and bottled at a healthy 90-proof.
Once opened, this whiskey yields an enticing aroma of anise seed, orange, rye bread, honey, spice, resin, and oak. These pave the way for a sweet and complex palate of dried dark fruits, apricot, strawberry, rose petals, honey, allspice, cinnamon, clove, and mint. All are then tied together by a long and lingering finish supported by notes of honey and butterscotch.
