Tracing its origins to 1935 when Count Gaetano Marzotto began cultivating grapes in a portion of the countryside in Italy’s northern Trentino-Alto Adige region, Santa Margherita is a winery famed for being the first to vinify Pinot Grigio as its own standalone varietal. Named after Count Marzotto’s wife Margherita, the winery has since become one of the largest and most esteemed wine producers in northern Italy, dotting the landscape from Veneto to Tuscany with their vineyards all of which supply the fruits used to create their many exquisite wine expressions.
Chief among these is the Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio, a white wine expression that single-handedly put the winery on the map as far as wine lovers are concerned. Made exclusively from estate-grown Pinot Grigio, each vintage starts its life with the grapes being hand-harvested before being washed, pressed, and vinified in temperature-controlled tanks.
Pale straw yellow in color, each sip of this wine begins with a clean and intense bouquet of orchard fruits which then give way to a bone-dry palate of golden apples, ripe tropical fruits, and bright acidity before neatly coming together into a crisp and refreshing finish that makes it an excellent pairing for rich fish, shellfish, pasta, and rice dishes as well as mild, soft cheeses.
