Developed over 130 years ago by one Luigi Manzi, Sambuca is a type of Italian anise-flavored liqueur whose secret recipe also includes, among others, elderberries – whose Latin name "Sambucus" serves as the basis of its name. One of the more popular brands has been Romana which offers two varieties of the liqueur namely the more traditional white sambuca and the deeper-colored black sambuca both of which prominently feature Rome’s most iconic structure, the Colosseum, on their label.
Each batch of Romana Sambuca begins with a neutral spirit base which is then blended with essential oils obtained from star anise, elderberries, and a host of other undisclosed secret herbs and spices. After this, the finished liqueur is then brought to proof before finally being bottled.
On the nose, this liqueur yields a pleasing aroma of sweet anise which then gives way to a thick and scrumptious palate of licorice, more anise, elderberries, and oily spice, all neatly tied together by a toasty finish with a mild alcohol burn.
