Established in the late 18th century, Metaxa was founded with the goal of crafting a unique category of brandy-like spirit crafted from Muscat wines, aged wine distillates, and Mediterranean botanicals. For over a century, the brand has produced various iterations of this one-of-a-kind distilled spirit before finally deciding to expand the catalog by including other traditional Greek spirits. One of the first to be included was Ouzo – an anise-flavored spirit originally developed back in the 14th century by the resident monks of Mount Athos.
Similar to its Levantine cousin the arak, each batch of Metaxa Ouzo Greek Liquor starts its life as a neutral spirit distilled from grape must. This spirit is then flavored with anise and a secret blend of Mediterranean herbs and spices before being re-distilled twice to homogenize its flavors. The resulting Ouzo is then tamed with pure water before finally being bottled.
Once opened, this crystal-clear spirit imparts a robust and complex aroma of anise, licorice, and herbs, paving the way for a silky and warming palate of mint, mastic, more licorice and anise, fennel, and coriander, culminating in a drying finish with an intense alcohol bite.
