The Gosling's brand of rum was founded by James Gosling in 1806, who set out from England with £10,000 in merchandise intent on selling them for a profit in America. While underway, however, he was waylaid to the island of Bermuda, and rather than continue to his destination, he decided to set up shop on the island itself. The company initially sells various wares and then decided to pursue rum blending in 1860, and eventually developed its most iconic rum – the Black Seal Rum.
Each batch of this rum is a selection of pot still and continuous still rums sourced from various distilleries across the Caribbean. These rums are meticulously blended and aged in single-use bourbon barrels to create the rum's distinctive dark color as well as its rich and complex flavor profile.
On the nose, the rum conveys a sweet aroma of dried fruits, molasses, caramel, and allspice. These pave the way for a creamy and full-bodied palate of stewed fruits, more molasses and caramel, vanilla, butterscotch, and hints of sweet cinnamon. These all culminate in a warm and lingering finish of baked fruits, caramelized brown sugar, and herbs.
