Established nearly 200 years ago by George Smith after having received his distilling license, Glenlivet was off to a rocky start as jealous neighbors burned his first distillery – with him in it! Having survived the ordeal, however, he pacified his neighbors by constantly carrying a pair of pistols as a dire warning should they ever cause another incident. This newfound piece allowed him to begin his operations which would continue almost uninterrupted long after his passing. Today, his distillery stands as one of Scotland’s largest and most prestigious producers of single malt whisky showing that perseverance and a little bit of boldness can create something truly great.
190 years following their founding, the distillery decided to pay tribute to George with the release of the Glenlivet Founders Reserve, a single malt expression made with the same skill and techniques used by George during his tenure at the distillery. Carefully crafted under the watchful eye of Master Distiller Alan Winchester, the Scotch is distilled from 100% malted Scottish barley using lantern-shaped stills designed by Smith himself after which they are then left to age for at least 3 years in a combination of traditional and first-fill American oak casks. Following maturation, the finished whisky is then diluted with pure water to achieve the optimal taste and texture before being finally bottled.
On the nose, this light amber Scotch begins with a welcoming whiff of dried fruits, honey, toffee, nuts, malt, and woody notes, paving the way for a gentle and scrumptious palate of honeyed malt, more toffee and dried fruits, milk chocolate, graham crackers, oak, and char, culminating in a medium finish of more fruits, honey, char, and creamy toffee.
