Founded by George Smith in 1824, the Glenlivet Distillery stands as Scotland’s longest-operating distillery having produced whiskies almost non-stop since first opening its doors nearly 200 years ago. Undergoing a brief pause in production during World War 2 due to dwindling barley supplies, the whiskey restarted production following the war in order to both cater to the post-war world’s growing demand for whisky and help Britain earn some much-needed foreign revenue. This allowed the distillery to catapult itself to the top of the single malt scene boasting millions of bottles in sales and an equally impressive range of core and limited edition expressions.
One of these is the Glenlivet 15-Year, a cask-finished single malt released as a medium-tier offering for their core range. Packing the classic Speyside character in every sip, each batch of this Scotch begins with 100% malted barley which is fermented and then twice-distilled in traditional copper pot stills. The resulting spirit is aged for a decade and a half in very used bourbon barrels. After this lengthy aging period, the whisky is transferred to new French Limousin oak casks for the finishing process that lasts for a number of months.
On the nose, this deep gold whisky conveys a welcoming aroma of ripe apples, fudge, buttercream, Madeira wine, almonds, oak, and floral notes which then give way to a sweet and racy palate of juicy peaches, orange slices, vanilla, butterscotch, more almonds, delicate spice, and faint Chardonnay-like oakiness, culminating in a long and dry finish accented by notes of warming peppers.
