Named after 18th-century master distiller Basil Hayden Sr. who was famed for using a higher proportion of rye in his whiskey mash bills, the brand makes use of a modern iteration of his iconic recipe to create its range of “artfully aged” bottlings that deliver a well-rounded combination of sweetness and spice that makes them such excellent sipping and mixing bourbons.
Each batch of Basil Hayden Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey begins with a mash bill consisting of 63% corn, 27% rye, and 10% malted barley which is fermented and then twice-distilled before being left to mature in new, charred American oak barrels. After several years of developing its unique flavor profile.
Once on the glass, this bourbon imparts a warming aroma of cinnamon, rye, pepper, honeysuckle, and cornbread. This then gives way to a light and drying palate of roasted pear, brown sugar, more rye spice, toasted oak, and bitter barrel char, culminating in a brief and meaty finish accented by notes of spice and vegetal notes.
