Founded in 1879, the Absolut brand of vodka was the result of Lars Olsson Smith’s desire to challenge Stockholm’s monopoly on the spirits business. Setting up shop in Åhus, Sweden, he began distilling his vodka using the finest ingredients he could get his hands on and selling them just outside the city limits of Stockholm at a modest discount earning him a substantial fortune. Today, his company is one of the largest spirits companies in the world being sold in 126 countries to the tune of over 100 million bottles annually.
Launched in 2011 as their answer to the ever-growing popularity of ultra-premium vodka, the Absolut Elyx Vodka is made exclusively from single-estate winter wheat sourced from the nearby Råbelöf Castle which is fermented and then distilled using a vintage copper column still manufactured in 1921 resulting in a plush vodka expression of peerless flavor and smoothness which they then cut using pure, locally-sourced water before finally being packaged in a specially-designed bottle adorned by a copper cap.
Once poured, this vodka opens up with a very clean marshmallowy nose that then gives way to a firm yet silky palate of faint wheat sweetness before culminating in a refreshing finish of vanilla, gingerbread, and cream.
