Operating out of Moray, Scotland, the BenRiach distillery has had quite a history starting with its establishment in 1898. Originally producing Scotch for Pattison's whisky, a major Scotch purchaser, the distillery was forced to downsize following its bankruptcy with only their malting remaining active for much of the 20th century.

One such expression is the BenRiach 25 Year Authenticus, a peated malt boasting a complex, smoky character more commonly associated with Islay expressions. Each batch of this whisky begins with malted Scottish barley which has been dried over peat flames, fermented, and then distilled. The resulting spirit then underwent maturation for over two decades in a combination of very old ex-bourbon, ex-Port, and ex-sherry barrels, slowly developing its distinctive flavor profile before finally being tapped, diluted, and bottled.

On the nose, this dark amber whisky opens up with an enticing whiff of the nose of malt, pineapple, verbena, and peat, paving the way for the full-bodied and sophisticated palate of citrus, sweet fruits, honey, sherry, aniseed, dried herbs, basil, pepper, earthy peat, and cedarwood before wrapping up with a rounded and persistent finish of vibrant fruit notes.
