Introduced in 1992 as one of Jim Beam’s family of small-batch bourbon brands, Basil Hayden gets its name from 18th-century distiller Meredith Basil Hayden Sr., who was known for using a higher percentage of rye in bourbon.
In keeping with Hayden’s legacy, this modern take on his legendary bourbon gets its punch from a high-rye mash bill. As in the case of Jim Beam’s other high-end bourbon brands, this allows for a richer, sweeter, and spicier spirit guaranteed to be appreciated by both newcomers and seasoned bourbon drinkers.
The Basil Hayden Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey mash bill consists of 63% corn, 27% rye, and 10% malted barley, which is fermented and then distilled in copper stills. The resulting spirit is then artfully aged in new, charred American oak barrels for several years before finally being tapped, cut with pure water, and bottled.
Once poured, this bourbon yields a warming aroma of rye spice, pepper, cinnamon, cornbread, and honeysuckle which then give way to a light and drying palate of brown sugar, roasted pear, more rye spice, oak, and bitter barrel char before culminating in a brief and savory finish of delicate vegetal notes and more spice.
